Moving twins to toddler beds

There are no set rules about moving twins to toddler beds from their cribs.  However, there are some guidelines and cues that will make the transition necessary.

Apparently somewhere between the age of 18 months to 3 years toddlers are moved out of their cribs.  Some parents move them because there is another baby on the way but the most important reason is that one or both twins are able to climb out of their cribs.  Now if you are lucky and your children have not tried to climb out of their cribs, once they reach 36 inches you should move them to a big kids bed.

At the tender age of 20 months one of my twins - the one who is taller - learned to put her feet on top of the railing and keep herself hanging half way up in the air and yelling mommy hap=help. That is a scary site for mothers to see.  My options were installing a crib tent or moving her to a toddler bed.  I had previously used the crib tent on my first child's crib - from the beginning - but that was meant more to keep the cat away from  her.  If I had used the tent from the beginning maybe my Twin A would not have tried to get out of her crib.  But it seemed too late to use the crib tent on a 20 month old child.  So my choice was to move her to the toddler bed.  But I had one more dilemma. My smaller twin was not able put her feet on the railing yet but if I did not move her to a toddler bed, it would have been awkward and she probably would have liked to have the same freedom as her sister.

So we moved them both to toddler beds which ended my peace of mind.  Now when they wake up very early, they don't go back to sleep but start playing in their room or rather messing it up.  By keeping the door to their room closed, we stopped the twins from roaming around the house, that is until they figure how to open the door.  Meanwhile having them up early in their room has its moments as they fight over missing soothers, drop all the toys on the floor and pull out all their clothing from the drawers.  However, you should also be prepared for some Kodak moments, like the time I went in their room and Twin B was sitting on the floor with her dress underpants put nicely on her head as a hat, or finding Twin A naked, sitting in a drawer.

Considering what may happen in their room,  other mothers may decide to consider 2 crib tents in order to keep the kids in their cribs until they are more mature. So good luck to you when you move your twins out of their cribs.
